IMOGEN ALABASTER
Portraits
After years of discouragement at art college, when tutors tried to dissuade me from painting people, I quietly rebelled against them by hiding limitless faces into my artworks. Painted subtly, and imitating natural paint splashes, they could almost go unnoticed. Thankfully, now I have found my confidence and adore capturing the challenging and fascinating figure.
I tend to focus on self portraits, as so many artists have done before me. By concentrating on my own image I hope to explore my experiences - of love, loss, anxiety and desire - in the hope that the viewer sees fragments of themselves within my images.
In June 2021 our first child was born. During my pregnancy I documented my changing figure as he grew within me. Seeing and feeling my body grow was fascinating, the most peaceful I have felt in my life. Since his birth I have gradually found time and inspiration again, creating a series of self-portraits capturing intimate moments of us in the bath. Two naked, natural bodies, sharing the warmth of the water.
