I adore painting portraits. People are endlessly fascinating. A simple expression can convey much more than any words could, the glint in someone’s eye can be immediately powerful or threatening or spark flirtation and excitement. Love can be expressed with a gesture, a head-tilt, a smile.

 

My use of colour is intuitive and poetic, with loose and expressive brushstrokes. Inspired by drawing with my toddler, it is so incredible to see him make marks so freely and with such joy. It doesn’t matter if things are ‘perfect’. I see the world in a million colours. Skin is not just pink or brown... It is a billion speckles and glimmers of light, in every colour imaginable.

I regularly focus on self-portraits, as so many artists have done before me. By concentrating on my own image I hope to explore my experiences - of love, loss, anxiety and desire - in the hope that the viewer sees fragments of themselves within my images.
